3D welding & metal-deposition workspace
A browser workspace for industrial welding and Directed Metal Deposition: STEP models, URDF robots, weld-edge selection and torch orientation, replacing a legacy desktop tool.

- Rendered in the browser
- STEP + URDF
- Type, lint & format checks
- CI
The problem
Lab engineers plan welding and metal-deposition jobs in a legacy system. The migration needed a modern web workspace that can render CAD parts and robot models and let engineers pick weld edges and torch orientation.
My role
Frontend engineer who set up the codebase and builds the 3D workspace, alongside my full-time role.
Main workflows
- STEP part rendering and URDF robot visualization
- Weld-edge selection and torch orientation
- Robot-connection workflow
Technical decisions
- Split responsibilities: the browser renders CAD geometry while the backend parses topology, which keeps heavy parsing off the client.
- Chose TanStack Start with TanStack Query, Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui for a typed, conventional codebase.
- Added TypeScript checks, ESLint, Prettier, Husky pre-commit hooks and CI scripts from day one.
Results
- A working React Three Fiber workspace as part of the ongoing legacy migration.
- A codebase with enforced type, lint and format checks for the whole team.
Stack
- React
- React Three Fiber
- Three.js
- OpenCascade.js
- TanStack Start
- TanStack Query
- Tailwind CSS
- shadcn/ui
Limits & context
Lab software in active development: no source or screenshots are published. The live workspace needs a login, which I can share on request.
“Having mentored him through several complex engineering projects over the years, I have witnessed his growth into an exceptional programmer with a broad technical profile and a strong aptitude for research. One of his most significant contributions was in the field of cybersecurity, where he designed and deployed multi-agent systems based on the Wazuh platform.”
